The roles, routines, language, work, friendships and small daily cues that used to confirm who you were may suddenly be missing. The result can feel like losing your footing in a life that looks, from the outside, like progress.
01What identity loss can feel like
- I do not feel like myself here.
- I feel less capable than I used to.
- I miss being known without explaining everything.
- I feel dependent in ways I did not expect.
- I do not know what my life is about now.
- I look lucky, but I feel lost.
02Why it happens
Identity is not only internal. It is supported by place, language, work, social rhythm, competence and recognition. When those supports change quickly, the self can feel less solid for a while.
03What helps
Therapy helps name what has changed, grieve what was lost, and rebuild continuity. The goal is not to become the old version of yourself again. It is to stop feeling erased inside the new life.
