Online therapy in English for people in Costa Rica

Life in Costa Rica can bring a change of pace without settling everything inside you. If you are looking for individual or couples therapy in English, we can begin by discussing what is difficult and whether working together online is possible.

Support for the life you are actually living

You may have moved for a relationship, remote work, retirement or a different future. Perhaps you have lived in Costa Rica for years. Either way, enjoying parts of your life does not remove your need for support.

I am Kita Tabachka, a UK-based, BACP-registered therapist. I work online with adults and couples. Before agreeing therapy, we check the requirements for your physical location, insurance arrangements and whether my service fits your needs.

This page is for English-speaking adults, including expats, international couples and people making a longer-term home in Costa Rica. Whether you live around San José and Escazú or in a coastal community such as Tamarindo, Nosara or Uvita, tell me where you will actually attend sessions. I do not have a local clinic.

Individual therapy: when the move is only part of the story

Maybe you manage daily life but feel unusually anxious, flat or alone. You might miss the version of yourself who had familiar friends, a clear role and somewhere to belong. Or the concern may have little to do with moving: grief, confidence, shame or a relationship that keeps hurting.

In individual therapy, we can look closely at what happens in your week and what you need from support. We might explore a pattern of overworking, the loss of independence after following a partner, or the difficulty of asking for help when people think you are living your dream.

You can enquire alone even if your relationship is the main concern. Read about loneliness after moving to Costa Rica or anxiety and remote work abroad.

Couples therapy: when you moved together but settled differently

One person may feel more at home while the other wants to leave. A working partner may have colleagues and an income while the other is carrying the work of settling in. Different expectations about money, family, language or time together can become the argument you keep having.

In couples therapy, we slow down a recent disagreement, hear each person's experience and look at what needs to change in practice. Both partners need room to speak. The aim is to understand your relationship and choices, without deciding in advance that you should stay together or live in a particular country.

If either person feels frightened, monitored or unable to speak freely, individual specialist support may be more appropriate than joint sessions. Read about relationship problems after moving to Costa Rica.

Working with me

My own move from Bulgaria to the UK informs my interest in belonging and starting again. I will still ask what your experience has been. Living abroad does not affect everyone in the same way.

We begin with a free 15–20 minute consultation. For couples, both partners attend. If we agree to begin couples work, I usually meet each of you individually to understand your background before joint sessions. We agree the purpose, fees and confidentiality arrangements first.

  • Individual therapy: £70 for 50 minutes.
  • Couples therapy: £100 per couple for 70 minutes.
  • Format: online video through Carepatron, in English.

Fees are charged in British pounds. Your payment provider may apply currency conversion charges. See the fees and process and my BACP profile.

Appointment times in Costa Rica

Costa Rica stays on UTC−6 throughout the year. The UK is six hours ahead during GMT and seven hours ahead during British Summer Time. Your morning can therefore overlap with my UK afternoon.

My usual working week is Monday to Friday. We confirm available appointments in both time zones, including around UK clock changes.

Before booking from Costa Rica

BACP registration is my UK professional registration. It is not Costa Rican registration. This page invites an enquiry; it does not guarantee that therapy can be provided in every situation. The Costa Rican professional body's telepsychology guidance highlights the need to check cross-border requirements.

Please include your country, approximate availability and whether you want individual or couples support. For couples joining from different countries, both locations need checking. Tell me before travelling during therapy so we can review the arrangements.

You will need somewhere private to speak and a reliable connection. We agree what happens if a call drops and how to access help locally. Read how I assess online therapy abroad. If you need a local psychologist, the CPPCR professional directory is a starting point; ask the practitioner about language, availability and suitability.

Questions about online therapy from Costa Rica

Are you based in Costa Rica?

No. I am based in the UK and work online. I do not advertise a Costa Rican clinic or Costa Rican professional registration.

Can I ask about support if I am not an expat?

Yes. You do not need to identify as an expat to enquire. The relevant questions are where you will attend from, what you need and whether working together is appropriate and permitted.

Can we join couples sessions from different places?

Potentially. Tell me both countries before booking. We need to check each location and make sure both people have privacy and a suitable appointment time.

Do you offer sessions in Spanish?

This page describes therapy in English. I also speak Bulgarian; I do not advertise Spanish-language therapy.

Do we have to be close to separating?

No. You can enquire about repeated arguments, distance, trust or adjusting to a move before deciding what should happen to the relationship.

Local and urgent support

This practice is not a crisis service. In an emergency in Costa Rica, call 911. For local psychological care, you can check the CPPCR professional directory and ask about English-language appointments.
