01The first year sounds like a holiday and feels like admin

Friends at home see the terraces and assume you have won. You are refreshing the cita previa page for the fortieth time, waiting on an NIE appointment, and translating a utility bill with your phone. Competent all day at work, then reduced to pointing at forms by lunchtime.

Feeling low in a beautiful place carries its own guilt. Who complains about Spain? So you stop saying how hard it is, and the loneliness gets quieter and heavier.

02Lonely in a country full of people

Expat circles in Madrid, Valencia, Malaga and Alicante turn over every season. Local circles formed at school and stay loyal for life, warm on the surface and slow to open. You are out most nights and known by almost no one by March.

This is a feature of how expat life is built in Spain. It is not a personal failing, and it responds to being taken seriously.

03When one partner settles and the other does not

A move to Spain falls unevenly on a couple. One partner has work, colleagues and a reason to leave the house. The other has admin, a language gap and a partner who is tired in the evenings. Or you moved for a Spanish partner and now live inside their family Sundays and their childhood friends.

The resentment is rarely about Spain. It is about whose version of this life counts, and who has carried the adaptation alone. Read about relationship crisis abroad and trailing partner support.

04What one-to-one therapy with me looks like

We begin where it hurts and make sense of it together. My approach is integrative and relational, drawing on attachment, parts work and trauma-informed therapy. Sessions are weekly. Individual sessions cost £70 for 50 minutes. Couples sessions cost £100 for 70 minutes. See fees and how to begin.

05Online, across Spain

I work online from the UK, so you do not travel anywhere. Spain is one hour ahead of the UK all year, which keeps appointment times simple to arrange. Before we begin, I check your location, suitability and available times. If you move to another country, we review whether continuing is possible before your next appointment.
